Monza vs Napoli: Osimhen back to scoring ways in six-goal thriller

Published on by , updated on

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen was on target for Napoli in their 4-2 away win at Monza in the Serie A on Sunday.

It was the striker’s first goal in five matches as Napoli got their first win since the victory over Juventus in early March.

Napoli had the most of the early exchanges but it was Monza who got the first goal of the game when Milan Djuric scored in the 9th minute to stun the reigning champions.

Despite Napoli’s spirited efforts in the first half, they could not get the equaliser but the second half was to be a different story entirely.

Osimhen leads the comeback

The second half was all Napoli and Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen led the lines as the reigning champions came out firing on all cylinders.

Osimhen equalised for Napoli in the 55th minute with a powerful header from a Zambo Anguissa assist before Matteo Politano made it two just a minute later.

The screws were turned on Monza again in the 61st minute as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia found space to set up Piotr Zielinski for Napoli's third as Monza capitulated in a 15-minute Napoli blitz.

Andrea Colpani reduced the deficit to 3-2 to give some ray of hope to the home team but the flavour didn't last long as Giacomo Raspadori restored Napoli's two-goal advantage six minutes later.

The win was needed by Napoli after three games without a win, and Osimhen will also be happy to be back scoring after a Serie A goal drought throughout March.

Not the best of seasons for Osimhen

After last season's heroics of leading Napoli to their first Scudetto title in three decades and also winning the Serie A top scorer's award, it was going to be an uphill task for Osimhen to replicate last season's form.

Napoli haven't reached the heights from last season as they are well out of the title race, sitting in seventh place with 48 points from 31 games and 31 points behind leaders Inter Milan.

The 25-year-old Nigerian striker has scored 12 goals from 19 matches in a season that has been blighted by injuries and was also away at the Africa Cup of Nations missing five matches in that period.

He was also sidelined in October and November last year due to a hamstring injury.

The reigning African Footballer of the Year also missed the last international window as the Super Eagles faced Ghana and Mali. He will be glad to be back in the goals again as Napoli push for a respectable finish in the league and hope to secure European football for next season.

It is left to see if the striker will continue at Napoli next season as a hoard of clubs have been circling for his signature with multiple reports suggesting Osimhen will be moving to the English Premier League next season.
