Iwobi: Why Fulham’s key man is struggling to maintain early-season momentum

Published on by , updated on

Alex Iwobi enjoyed a productive first half of the 2024/25 Premier League season, making 19 league appearances for Fulham, contributing five goals and three assists. His impact in Marco Silva’s system was evident, as he became a key figure in Fulham’s attacking play.

His ability to operate in multiple roles across midfield and the forward line made him indispensable, offering creativity and energy while helping link the play between defense and attack.

With Iwobi in form, Fulham carried a strong attacking presence and looked well-placed to push for a top-six finish.

However, since the turn of the year, the Nigerian international’s numbers have tailed off. In his last 10 appearances, he has only managed two goals and one assist. This decline is particularly striking, considering he has just set a record for his most productive Premier League season.

Despite the recent slump, Iwobi’s overall contribution remains significant. He has been directly involved in 28% of Fulham’s league goals this season, keeping him in the conversation for the club’s Player of the Season award.

His influence extends beyond goals and assists, as he leads Europe’s top five leagues in progressive carries into the final third, having completed this action 86 times in the league.

Tactical shift responsible for Alex Iwobi’s goal drought

The drop in attacking output raises questions. Is Iwobi fatigued after a demanding schedule? Or was his early-season form unsustainable? His performances for Nigeria during the recent international break offered little in the way of answers.

In the Super Eagles’ 2-0 win over Rwanda and 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe, Iwobi played a deeper role, partnering Wilfred Ndidi in midfield. While he wasn’t poor, he didn’t dominate either.

Back at Fulham, Marco Silva’s tactics may also play a role in his recent decline. The 28-year-old has seen shifts in his positioning, sometimes operating deeper rather than being given the freedom to roam forward.

Additionally, Fulham’s overall attacking form has dipped, which has naturally impacted his ability to rack up goal contributions.

With just a handful of games left in the season, Iwobi has the opportunity to regain his best form and finish strongly. Fulham’s attack still relies heavily on his creativity, and if Silva can find a way to get him closer to goal again, the Nigerian could rediscover his scoring touch.
