Orlando Pirates have confirmed the exit of winger Gilberto to Angolan champions Petro de Luanda.
The Angola international has been part of the Buccaneers since the summer transfer window. However, he has struggled to settle despite the reported R10 million the Soweto giants paid for him.
The emergence of Mohau Nkota and the impressive form of Relebohile Mofokeng have seen Gilberto struggle for game time at the club. Since his big-money move, the 23-year-old has made 12 appearances across all competitions but has not yet any significant contribution despite being an attacker.
Pirates loan the winger
“Orlando Pirates has reached an agreement for the loan transfer of Angolan international Gilberto to Petro de Luanda for the remainder of the season. The move sees Gilberto return to his hometown club, pending the successful completion of a medical,” the club confirmed through their media team.
Gilberto's exit is an obvious indication from coach Jose Riveiro that he currently does not really rate him. Pirates are currently chasing the Premier Soccer League title. They have collected 27 points from 11 games, six less than the defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns who have played a game more.
Last weekend, the Sea Robbers beat Al Ahly 2-1 in Cairo to top Group C and cement their place in the quarter-final of the Caf Champions League. This weekend, they play Richards Bay in the Nedbank Cup's Round of 32 fixture.
All those competitions mean the club need quality players and enough depth to be effective. It is interesting to see who will replace Gilberto with just a week left to conclude the winter transfer window.
