The Argentine midfielder wants out less than a year after joining the Brazilians

Matias Esquivel is reportedly on his way back to South America after agreeing to join Argentine side Club Atletico Talleres.

Esquivel joined Sundowns in January but wants out less than a year later to return to Argentina despite the PSL champions shelling out $2.5 million for him from Atletico Lanus.

According to iDiski Times, Sundowns are ready to allow the midfielder to leave since they are in line to make a profit on him while the player will get the move he desires.

Can Sundowns operate without Esquivel?

The outlet reports that Esquivel will join Club Atletico Talleres on loan but the South American club will have an obligation to buy, enabling Sundowns recoup their initial investment.

Esquivel made 13 appearances for Sundowns last season, scoring two goals while providing one assist, and the Brazilians are happy to let him leave due to the presence of Aubrey Modiba who has become a key figure in midfield.

His departure will also open up a slot for a foreign player on the Sundowns roster, allowing the club to further strengthen the squad after bringing in forwards Kobamelo Kodisang and Arthur de Oliveira Sales as well as defenders Kegan Johannes and Asekho Tiwani.

Midfielder’s exit will give room for more signings

Sundowns’ registered foreign players are Marcelo Allende, Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Sales, Abdelmounaim Boutouil and Erwin Saavedra with Esquivel’s exit also likely to allow the registration of Ethiopian Abubeker Nassir if a move away does not materialise.

Manqoba Mngqithi’s men will begin their season on Sunday with the MTN8 quarter-final clash against Polokwane City as they aim to challenge on multiple fronts in 2024-25.
