Sekhukhune United settle on familiar faces in major coaching changes

Babina Noko have gone for the tried and tested in search of PSL glory next season

Sekhukhune United have hired back coach Lehlohonolo Seema, three months after parting ways with him, in acrimonious fashion.

Babina Noko announced coaching changes on Thursday, revealing the return of Seema, who will be assisted by Kaitano Tembo and Paulos Masehe, while Nascent Nkhwashu serves as goalkeeper coach.

The decision comes less than two weeks after Sekhukhune parted ways with German tactician Peter Hyballa, who lasted just over a month at the club, with MacDonald Makhubedu handed reins on an interim basis.

Can Seema repeat the magic of last season?

In the new setup, Makhubedu, who was in charge of last weekend’s 1-0 loss to Cape Town City in the MTN8 quarter-final, has been moved from the technical bench and will now serve as the club’s Sporting Director.

Seema initially joined Sekhukhune in November 2023, replacing Brandon Truter, when the side were 10th in the PSL with 11 points from nine matches.

He led a revival as Babina Noko won nine, drew 10 and lost five of his 24 matches across all competitions, to move to fourth place in the PSL but his tenure came to an abrupt end in May with two games remaining.

The club reportedly placed him on ‘special leave’ as Makhubedu was handed the role on an interim basis until a suitable successor was found.

Returning coach will enjoy fruits of his labour

They settled on Hyballa in June but the German left early this month over what has been reported as misconduct.

Seema, who was voted coach of the month in February and March, will get a chance to enjoy the fruits of his labour when Sekhukune begin their CAF Confederation Cup campaign in the second preliminary round.

Sekhukhune were exempted from the first preliminary round and will now take on the winner between ELGECO Plus of Madagascar and CD Luanda from Angola on September 13.
