The Bafana Bafana legend is rumoured to be in talks with a South African team

Benni McCarthy is rumoured to be in talks with Mamelodi Sundowns with a view to taking over the hot seat in Chloorkop.

The Bafana Bafana legend has reportedly held the first round of talks with officials from Sundowns in the United Kingdom with more expected when he comes to South Africa soon.

According to Peter du Toit of SoccerBeat, sources within the club have confirmed that the former Cape Town City and AmaZulu tactician has emerged as the prime candidate to take over at Sundowns even though Manqoba Mngqithi is in charge.

Will Manqoba Mngqithi survive at Sundowns?

Mngqithi has been in charge since Rulani Mokwena parted ways with the club in early July although his role has never been made official.

With Sundowns starting the season in a less than impressive fashion, Mngqithi’s position has become subject to speculation, even though the campaign has just kicked off, hence the reports about McCarthy.

McCarthy is still without a job since leaving Manchester United at the end of last season, after serving as the club’s attacking coach for two years, and he has been linked with clubs in America.

But in a surprising twist, he is now being linked with the Sundowns job which is one of the hottest seats in South African football.

McCarthy has expressed a desire to return home

“Flemming Berg met with Benni last week Thursday in London yes,” a source told The South African of a meeting between Sundowns’ Sporting Director and the former South Africa striker.

McCarthy expressed a desire of returning to South Africa when he left United and could be swayed by the interest from Sundowns, if it is true.

“After leaving United, that passion for wanting to be a head coach again has come through and that is the next step for me. To go back to the African continent, to manage one of the big, important teams with the knowledge that I have gained, would be amazing,” McCarthy told SuperSport.
