The Hugo Broos-led team believe they will be dining with the big boys during the prestigious global competition.

South Africa international Terrence Mashego has revealed the playing unit is convinced of a place in the 2026 Fifa World Cup that will be jointly held by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

It has been a good year for Bafana Bafana who started 2024 with a bronze medal in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. It motivated them and recorded a 1-1 draw away against Nigeria in the World Cup qualifier before beating Zimbabwe 3-1 at home.

One of the players who has been delivering despite his age is Themba Zwane. He played a crucial role in the aforementioned competitions and is already envisioning himself at the World Cup.

‘We need to make sure we qualify'

“When you speak to the guys, everyone believes that we can do this. I remember even Mshishi was saying, ‘This is my last World Cup so we need to make sure that we qualify’. So, players believe that we are going to qualify. I think we owe it to South Africa to qualify.

“That one is the best, the best player,” Mashego said, referring to the 35-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns captain.

“He still has legs. That guy is the best but I think what pushes him is the idea that we need to qualify. Sometimes, you don’t even feel your legs when you have a reason. Because of why you push.”

Bafana Bafana last played in the World Cup back in 2010 when South Africa hosted it.
