DStv Diski Challnge: Kaizer Chiefs fight back to share spoils with Richards Bay but lose top spot to Stellenbosch

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs had to fight back twice to avoid a second defeat in the DStv Diski Challenge when they secured a 2-2 draw against Richards Bay on Sunday.

Chiefs, who had recorded a goalless draw against Stellenbosch FC in the PSL Reserve League the previous week, were looking to get back to winning ways but found the going tough against the Natal Rich Boyz who took the lead inside 29 minutes via the penalty spot.

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Takalani Mazhamba fouled Nhlonelo Bomelo inside the box, and after the referee pointed to the spot, Nhlonelo Bomelo stepped up to comfortably convert.

How did Chiefs get back in the game?

Richards Bay held on for a 1-0 lead at halftime but six minutes after the break, the game was 1-1 after Neo Bohloko levelled matters with a beautiful goal.

However, just six minutes later, Richards Bay restored their lead through Thobani Mngomezulu and the home side frustrated Amakhosi until the 74th minute when the Soweto giants found the equaliser.

Matala Makhubo struck from outside the box for 2-2 and both teams held on to ensure a share of the spoils which sees Chiefs lose their top spot on the table to Stellenbosch, both on 14 points, but Stellies have a superior goal difference.

Who were the big winners on Sunday?

Meanwhile, Cape Town City returned to winning ways in fine fashion as they thrashed Polokwane City 5-2 to move to third place on the table with 13 points while SuperSport United beat AmaZulu 3-1 also on Sunday.

In the other match played on Sunday, Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants also played to a 2-2 draw.

Mamelodi Sundowns, who had their match against Royal AM cancelled, and Orlando Pirates, who won 1-0 against Golden Arrows on Saturday, complete the top five as they both have 12 points.
