Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs legend Siphiwe Tshabalala is impressed with what Caf has done when it comes to inter-club competitions.
The 40-year-old was part of the team that conducted the group stage draw on Monday afternoon at the Caf headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
South Africa will be represented by Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in the Caf Champions League while newcomers Stellenbosch will be doing the honors in the Caf Confederation Cup.
Chiefs legend Tshabalala explains the strides made by Caf
“Definitely there’s growth [in African football] teams have stepped up, there’s value in CAF competitions and one has to give credit to CAF for the investment they have put into the competition which enables teams to strengthen their teams,” he said during the event.
“It’s also allowed strong players to [remain at teams], there’s value in CAF. We have seen the success of the past edition of AFCON and the list of players in Africa representing their national teams.
“They are playing domestic football and dominating in CAF competitions. So it’s a great tournament that yields great success for national teams, this year’s edition promises to be exciting with five former champions participating, and I’m looking forward to a great tournament.”
Last season, Mamelodi Sundowns reached the semi-final of the Caf Champions League but were undone by Esperance. Coach Manqoba Mngqithi hopes to go all the way in this edition after replacing Rulani Mokwena.
Pirates fell in the second preliminary round, but they have been tipped to perform well in the 202/25 campaign.
