Chiefs mentality working but strikers put defenders under pressure – Duba

Kaizer Chiefs attacker Wandile Duba insists the club's inconsistent run is not down to the mentality since the team is always working hard to win games.

The Glamour Boys are desperate for silverware after going for a decade without any. Despite the appointment of Nasreddine nabi as their coach, Amakhosi have been struggling for consistency across all competitions.

In the Premier Soccer League, the Soweto giants are currently placed fifth on the table with 21 points from 14 matches. Duba, who has been among the club's key players in the ongoing campaign, believes lack of concentration is the team's main undoing.

The [winning] mentality is still there, and it works,” the 20-year-old said ahead of their Round of 16 Nedbank game against Free Agents on Sunday at the FNB Stadium.

“It’s just the small mistakes that are costing us like I mentioned in the beginning, the lack of concentration the whole 90 minutes. But the desire and the mentality to win matches is still there.

“I mean even when you check the stats of every game you can see the shots we create and how well our attack [department] is doing. It’s the defence that’s still giving us a challenge at the moment.”

Duba has further explained why he feels sometimes the team gets punished owing to failure to take the many chances created.

“Obviously, we [strikers] put ourselves under pressure because at Kaizer Chiefs we get paid to score goals. So, if we don’t score goals, we put our defenders under pressure. So, we have to score goals so that our defence doesn’t have pressure.”

The Nedbank Cup is arguably Kaizer Chiefs' hope of winning silverware and ending their decade-long hunger.
