Chiefs, Sundowns & Cape Town City stars attract European interest

Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City stars have attracted interest from the European clubs.

South Africa has been making strides somewhat in exporting young talent overseas. Antonio van Wyk recently joined Austrian club SV Ried, and Shandre Campbell joined Club Brugge a few months ago.

Other youngsters, including Relebohile Mofokeng and Luke Baartman, have also been linked with clubs abroad.

According to KickOff, Amakhosi DDC youngster Vicky Mkhawana, Sundowns winger Siyabonga Mabena, and Cape Town City's Emile Witbooi are reportedly being pursued by unnamed European clubs.

The trio were scouted while playing for the South African under-17 team (Amajimbos).

Mkhawana, a promising Chiefs youngster, shone at the U17 AFCON last year, scoring three goals in four games. He signed a first-team contract with Chiefs in January.

Meanwhile, Mabena also had an impressive tournament, securing a handful of man of the match accolades.

He has also made his name in Sundowns colours since getting promotion during Rulani Mokwena’s tenure.

Witbooi has become a star player for Amajimbos, currently participating in the FIFA TDS 6 Nations tournament in Côte d'Ivoire.

His coach at Cape Town City, Lebohang Manyama, recently expressed the club's ambition to send Witbooi to Europe.

“I think for me, a player like him, their vision should be Europe,” said Manyama during the Betway Premiership launch.

“To push for a debut in the PSL? Yeah, it will happen if it’s meant to happen. But I see him as a player that can go and do a lot of things in Europe. And I think for him, the earlier the better.

“Our vision as a club is to try and get him there as soon as possible. But obviously we have to try and give him experience in our league because he needs to show what he can do.

“As much as we want to give him the opportunities that I think he deserves, he’s shown, we trained with him the whole pre-season. What everybody is talking about…we see even worse at training.

“But you also got to be careful with him and not push him too soon because you never know the time.”
