Chiefs target scores to send Nabi strong message

South Africa international Asanele Velebayi was on target as his team Cape Town Spurs claimed a 2-1 win over Hungry Lions at the Athlone Stadium on Monday.

The 21-year-old was recently made the club's captain despite his desire to leave the Urban Warriors for Kaizer Chiefs. The Glamour Boys were desperate to land the versatile attacker but failed to reach an agreement with Spurs.

The visitors opened the scoring courtesy of Ronaldo Van Neel from the penalty spot after 36 minutes. It was the difference between the teams in the first 45 minutes.

However, Spurs battled for an equaliser which eventually came in the 59th minute through the versatile attacker, Velebayi.

The winning strike came barely five minutes before the conclusion of the match thanks to Jarrod Moroole.

It was Cape Town Spurs' fourth game in the 2024/25 second-tier fixture. They started with a goalless draw against the University of Pretoria before defeating Venda by a solitary goal in their first home game.

Spurs recorded a second consecutive goalless draw away to Milford FC in their third match before their Monday victory.

The Glamour Boys signed Fiacre Ntwari, Rushwin Dortley, Gaston Sirino, Miguel Inacio, Bongani Sam, Njabulo Blom, and Bradley Cross for the new season.

Only Sam and Blom missed the game against Marumo Gallants which Amakhosi won 2-1 to ensure coach Nasreddine Nabi started his adventure in Mzansi with a win.

However, after failing to sign attackers, Nabi might try to get Velebayi in the short transfer window scheduled for January.
