‘Confident’ Bafana ready for Benin challenge in the 2026 World Cup qualifier

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is confident his team has what it takes to tame Benin in the 2026 Fifa World Cup Group C's outing.

Since taking charge of the South African national team, the Belgian has helped the country hit some good levels as far as football is concerned. In the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Bafana Bafana defied the odds to go all the way and claim a bronze in the biennial competition held in Ivory Coast.

The 72-year-old is now close to helping Mzansi play in the World Cup for the first time since 2010 when they hosted the global competition.

Ahead of the Tuesday meeting in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, the former Cameroon coach has explained why he feels Bafana will silence the Cheetahs and further strengthen their chances of playing in the tournament that will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

‘Imagine if Bafana win on Tuesday…'

“We’re ready for the game [on Tuesday], we played a good game on Friday against Lesotho, a very difficult game and we know tomorrow will be difficult again, Benin is a good team,” he said in a pre-match interview.

“So [against Benin] it will be no different, we will play against a good team, we know that, but on the other side we’re confident in ourselves, if you see the progression of South Africa in the last year, it’s enormous, so we’re confident.

“This can be a key day, imagine we win tomorrow, Benin will be five points behind already, Nigeria is already at four points and we will see what will happen in the other games, it can be a key day, we will do everything to win.”

A win for Bafana will take them to 13 points while the Cheetahs will be on 11 if they claim maximum points.
