SAFA boss defends Bafana Bafana despite ‘stressful’ AFCON qualifier against Uganda

Danny Jordaan is not panicking over South Africa’s poor display against the Cranes

SAFA president Danny Jordaan is not worried by Bafana Bafana’s disappointing 2-2 draw with Uganda in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

South Africa were close to suffering an embarrassing home loss after the Cranes came from a goal down to score two quick second half goals before Thalente Mbatha rescued a point for Hugo Broos’ men.

The draw left a bitter taste in the mouth for Bafana Bafana fans who felt they should have easily won the match given their first half dominance but Jordaan is among those happy that the national team showed character to rescue a point.

“Yes, it was a stressful game, but our players showed the tenacity and strength to come back, and the determination to continue to have positive results,” Jordaan told SABC.

“Over the last 30 matches, Bafana have only lost two – against Rwanda and Mali, we won the rest of the games, which is 28 games that we've won or drawn.”

South Africa will take on South Sudan in their next game on Tuesday where maximum points are expected and Jordaan feels the players will put in a good show in Juba despite the challenging conditions they will be playing under.

What should fans expect from Bafana Bafana?

“I think they know we have one point, and now we have to go against South Sudan and collect another point because we have to go back to the Africa Cup of Nations again,” he added.

“It won't be easy [in Juba] – firstly, there's an artificial pitch, and secondly, it's a small pitch, but they know their ability to play is there. We had chances [against Uganda] and didn't take it, but that's now part of our history, and we must continue as we go to South Sudan.”
