Duba opens up on new Chiefs’ position: ‘That’s a difficult role, I don’t want to lie’

Kaizer Chiefs youngster Wandile Duba is among the players who have benefited at the club after Nasreddine Nabi's arrival.

The 20-year-old Amakhosi graduate has played in all three Premier Soccer League matches in the 2024/25 season where they have claimed two wins and a loss. The attacker has also managed to get an assist for the Soweto Giants.

Under coach Arthur Zwane, who promoted him to the senior team, Duba played as a striker, a position he has held since his reserve days.

Coach Nabi has drafted Duba to the wing where, on some occasions, he is forced to play as a wingback depending on the tactics and the dimension of the game. Former Marumo Gallants forward Ranga Chivaviro is currently the main man for Nabi.

Despite conceding he is ready to play at any position for his club, Duba admits it is not easy because a lot is needed.

“I found out this season that I can actually play as a winger. He’s [Nabi] the one who prefers me to play on the side. If I think of it, it may be because of my speed and mentality,” he told the media.

“I don’t mind playing [as a winger] because I’m a player willing to work. Any position I’m told to play at, I will play there. My natural position is being a striker, if the coach feels like Ranga has pressure he will make small changes.

“That [wingback position] is a difficult role, I don’t want to lie, I’m not familiar with playing as a wingback. We knew they [Mamelodi Sundowns] attack on the right side [through Thapelo] Morena’s side, so I was the player to deal with him.”

Amakhosi have been tipped to challenge for silverware this season if they sustain the zeal they have shown.
