Motsepe Foundation Championship leaders Durban City are mourning the death of midfielder Sinamandla Zondi, who passed away on Tuesday.
Zondi passed away moments after warming up for his club’s match against Milford FC with reports saying he collapsed before being rushed to hospital.
The game went on with Milford FC scoring in the fourth minute via a Siphamandla Ndlabi penalty but at halftime, the match was stopped when information filtered in that Zondo had passed away.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of Sinamandla Zondi aka Sgora, a Loved member of the Durban City family,” the club confirmed via a statement.
What has Durban City said over the death?
“Sinamanda was more than a talented footballer; He was a teammate, a friend, a brother, a son and an inspiration to all who knew him.
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, teammates, coaches and everyone affected by this tragic loss. We will continue to support those close to him during this difficult time.”
Zondi made his debut for the club as a teenager in 2021, when they were still known as Maritzburg United, and had made 24 appearances this season before his untimely demise aged just 22.
Durban City still lead the Motsepe Championship table with 46 points from 25 matches, five more than second-placed Kruger United, who have played a game more as they look for automatic promotion to the PSL.
