‘Professor’ questions exclusion of Evidence Makgopa from Bafana Bafana squad

Former South Africa player Mlungisi “Professor” Ngubane does not understand why Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos did not include Evidence Makgopa into his squad.

Broos unveiled his final 23-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Congo this month but there was no space for Orlando Pirates striker Makgopa.

The 24-year-old was not even in the 32-man provisional team but “Professor” feels Broos has erred by snubbing the striker who could have offered him something different.

Why is ‘Professor’ angry at coach Hugo Broos?

“Up front, I don’t understand why a tall striker like Makgopa is not there,” he told KickOff.

“Broos should have included him in the preliminary squad. Makgopa always rescues him when things are going bad.

“How do you leave out such a tall striker when you are going to face Congo? He just scored two goals recently. He [Broos] made a big mistake by leaving him out.”

Makgopa is forced to contend with spells on the bench

Makgopa last featured for Bafana Bafana at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations when they finished third with Broos preferring other attackers since.

The forward is also not helped by the fact that he is not a regular at club level where Tshegofatso Mabasa is coach Jose Riveiro’s first-choice striker.

However, he has been contributing off the bench as witnessed during Pirates’ 3-0 victory over Polokwane last week when he scored twice soon after his introduction.
