Ex-Chiefs coach explains why Amakhosi must stay away from Lorch & Mbule

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan has advised the Glamour Boys against signing either Thembinkosi Lorch or Sipho Mbule.

Lorch and Mbule are both on loan at Wydad Athletic Club and Sekhukhune United respectively from Mamelodi Sundowns with their futures at the PSL champions uncertain beyond this season.

That means they will be available on the market at the end of the campaign as Sundowns do not look to be interested in welcoming them back.

However, after Lorch was heavily linked with Chiefs in the January transfer window before heading to Morocco, Khan is relieved that he did not sign for Nasreddine Nabi’s team, and would not want to see him at Naturena, same as Mbule.

“What’s important is for Chiefs to maintain the team spirit, I wouldn’t advise them to sign Mbule and Lorch even if they were free [agents] to be honest,” Farouk Khan told Soccer Beat, explaining his dislike for the duo’s behaviour off the pitch.

“The two players come with a lot of baggage, they are good players, but what they do off the field it’s going to influence what happens on the field.

“Chiefs once signed Khama Billiat from Sundowns, and he’s a very good player, but he came with a lot of off-field problems.

“So, when I look at this, I don’t just look at the technical and tactical ability, I also look at the mentality and discipline because what makes a great team is players who are disciplined and don’t party.”

The two players have had some off-field issues to deal with during the course of their careers with Mbule having been reported to have arrived at training under the influence of alcohol in March 2023 while Lorch was filmed while drunk in June 2024.
