Ex-Chiefs & Sundowns forward slams PSL strikers: ‘They use wrong technique’

Published on by

A former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns striker has slammed PSL strikers for a noticeable decline in goal-scoring in the league compared to previous seasons.

You can just count a few centre-forwards who have been consistent in scoring goals.

Peter Shalulile of Mamelodi Sundowns is one of them. He has scored 90 goals in 158 games since joining Sundowns in 2020 from Highlands Park.

Bradley Grobler has made a significant impact in the penalty area for SuperSport United

Others who have at times come to the party are Khanyisa Mayo who recently left Cape Town City to join CR Belouizdad in Algeria.

Tshegofatso Mabasa was on form last season and won the top goal scorer award with 16 goals.

However, Collins Mbesuma’s 2004/05 season record of finishing the campaign with 25 goals has yet to be broken after almost two decades.

Mphela, who was also a consistent-scoring striker for Sundowns has pointed out factors behind lack of goals in PSL’s current strikers.

KATLEGO MPHELA ON WHY PSL STRIKERS AREN’T SCORING AS GOALS AS IN THE PAST

“I think, first of all, most of the guys use the wrong technique, in terms of using the side foot, if you want to shoot, the decision making and there is a lack of composure – everyone is in a rush,” said Mphela in the interview with Pitchside Podcast.

“But also, you must remember, when we were playing, we always stayed behind. We don't wait for the coach to teach us how to score, target practice, all of that. It's about repetition. It's like riding a bicycle – you have to repeat, repeat and in the game it will come naturally.

“I don't think most of these guys do extra training. They need that. You can't just wake up and score goals.

“I don't think they are bad strikers. You don't just wake up and score goals, To play in the PSLI means you've been scoring goals when you were younger, but now you are at a different level, there is pressure, there are many things, so you have to practice more.

“Hopefully they get it right this season.”
