Ex-Pirates striker lauds former Chiefs keeper Khune – ‘He had some serious luck!’

Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune was the only hard nut to crack for striker Siyabonga Nomvethe during his active days in South African top-flight football.

Nomvethe played for both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, and is regarded as one of the best players to ever grace the top tier in Mzansi.

The now 47-year-old insists he had no problem beating goalkeepers with ease, but he was not lucky against Khune.

“There are many, but the only one goalkeeper that I didn’t exactly hit properly, one who had some serious luck is [Itumeleng] Khune,” he said in his interview with iDiski Times.

“Khune is the only one I haven’t hit properly. He is the only one; the rest I have hit them properly. I’d look then and think this was one. Once I get the ball, he is going to leak in goals,” he added.

The legendary goalkeeper served Kaizer Chiefs as a player for 25 years before being forced out after his contract expired at the end of the 2024/25 season.

No defender troubled Nomvethe?

“Best defender? There is no best defender I have ever come across or a defender I was scared of,” the former South Africa international added.

“Even now, when I play with the legends at Chiefs, they are still crying. I look at my performance, Thuso Phala’s performance…Doctor [Khumalo] even moaned when we were in Bloemfontein one day and said we should go back to playing professionally because we still had the pace at this age.

“But honestly, there is no one, absolutely no defender I’d say gave me a tough time. If anything, they were scared of me. They knew once I had the ball I wasn’t fooling around, I go forward,” he concluded.
