Ex-Sundowns coach wants PSL to ban & suspend erratic refs after alleging his team was denied penalties

Immediate former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi is unhappy with officials who he felt cost his team in the Premier Soccer League last weekend.

Golden Arrows played relegation-threatened Magesi at Seshego Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday. They were undone by Lehlegonolo Mokone's 27th-minute strike after John Mokone had done all the donkey work.

The result was a blow to Abafana Bes'thende who are chasing a top eight slot, while Dikwena Tsa Meetse boosted their chances of surviving the axe.

However, Mngqithi argues his team could have at least been given one penalty because there seemed to be fouls in Magesi's danger zone.

“I don’t think there is much that can be done, If people commit blatant mistakes and they are not banned or suspended, what else can you do because you don’t want to lose the referees we have, because we don’t have as many referees as well. And the ones that were here… I honestly trusted Akhona [Makalima] I don’t want to lie because I know she is capable of making an honest mistake,” Mngqithi opened up.

Mutizwa, Sibeko denied a penalty?

“I know that, and I accept that but the penalty on the foul on Knox [Mutizwa] opened my eyes because I thought that one was a blatant, blatant foul and in front of her eyes and there was nothing that was impeding her from seeing what really happened,” he continued.

“But the Sibeko penalty I don’t want to lie and say I’m clear about it. I still have to check that one because I’m not sure if the defender got to the ball first before it caught him. I just saw a defender that was behind and a player in front falling and the ball not in front of him.

“But I would be lying if I say I saw clearly but I saw what happened to Richards Bay as well and we are not talking about the same referees we are talking about different referees. It’s sad. SuperSport, I saw what happened in this very field, but I think it’s just that stage of the season,” he concluded.

Arrows are 10th on the table with 24 points from 19 games while Magesi jumped to 12th with 23 points after as many matches.
