Ex-Sundowns midfielder gives two reasons why Pirates won’t win PSL title

Published on by

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Roger Feutmba has explained why he feels his former team will win an eighth straight PSL title.

Sundowns enjoy a 12-point lead over second-placed Orlando Pirates, having accumulated 58 points, but the Buccaneers, on 46 points, have three games in hand.

That means Jose Riveiro’s team can narrow the gap to just three points, which would then set up a grand finish, in their final four games.

However, Feutmba feels Sundowns have two things that give them an advantage over Pirates, which will get them over the line as far as winning another league title is concerned.

“Sundowns are in advantageous position. They know how to defend the league when they are on top,” Feutmba told Soccer Laduma.

“Yes, Pirates have games in hand, but even if they win all their games, Sundowns will still have three points ahead of Pirates which still gives them advantage and that's why I am saying Sundowns can still win the title.”

Feutmba then went on regarding something else that Sundowns have in plenty but Pirates lack.

“The other advantage that Sundowns have is the depth and squad quality,” added the Cameroonian, who played for Sundowns between 1996 and 1999.

“When other clubs suffer from fatigue, injuries and suspensions, Sundowns have enough to replace any player in the squad and that's why they have been winning the league title for the past seven seasons and they will win it for the eighth season now. I see them doing that again.”

Both Sundowns and Pirates are currently focused on their CAF Champions League semi-final second legs, with the two of them having recorded goalless draws in the first legs in South Africa last weekend, against Egyptian sides Al Ahly and Pyramids respectively.

Sundowns will resume PSL action against Richards Bay on Wednesday April 30 while Pirates host Sekhukhune United on the same day.
