Mohamed Salah’s ex-coach joins Cape Town City

Cape Town City will be looking to tap into the knowledge and experience of former Orlando Pirates and Egypt national team assistant coach following the departure of veteran Muhsin Ertugral.

Ertugral was shown the door on Monday after failing to win any of his last 10 games, which has left Cape Town City in danger of relegation.

The 65-year-old has arrived in January and started with wins over Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates but ended up winning just three games in 14, leading to his sacking, and in his place, the club have appointed his assistants Diogo Peral and Lebogang Manyama with De Sa also joining the coaching team.

De Sa worked with Salah & Co in Egypt

Roger De Sa is not new to South African football as he also coached Platinum Stars, Maritzburg United, Ajax Cape Town and Bidvest Wits and at 60, he brings plenty of experience to the technical bench.

Part of that experience is coaching national teams after working as assistant to veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz at Egypt, Iran and most recently Qatar.

In Egypt, he worked with a star-studded squad that had the likes of Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, reaching the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final, where they lost to Senegal on post-match penalties.

Can new coaching team revive Cape Town?

He also helped Iran qualify and play at the 2022 World Cup and he returns to domestic football with his last involvement in the Premier Soccer League being as coach of Platinum Stars in the 2017-18 season.

The new technical bench have their work cut out as Ertugral left the Citizens in 13th place on the PSL table with 23 points from as many matches, just two better than SuperSport United, who occupy the relegation-promotion playoff position.

They will also have to get a tune out of the bloated squad left behind by Eric Tinkler which Ertugral claimed had no quality to compete in the PSL.
