Netherlands legend and former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens has died aged 73, the Dutch football federation has confirmed.
The former midfielder played 49 matches for the Oranje and his contribution was crucial as his national team finished second in 1974 and 1978 respectively.
He won the European Cup three times and the league twice before joining Barcelona where he went on to win Copa del Rey and the European Cup Winners' Cup.
Neeskens was Sundowns' coach in the 2011/12 campaign but fell out with the fans owing to inconsistencies, and Pitso Mosimane took over,

“With Johan Neeskens, the Dutch and international football world loses a legend. His name is forever linked to European successes with clubs like Ajax and Barcelona and two World Cup finals for the Dutch national team,” KNVB said in a statement.
“With his characteristic tackles, sublime insights, and iconic penalties, [he] will forever remain one of the most prominent and beloved players to ever play for our country.”
