The Heidedal native shed light on where his allegiance lies in the top flight
Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has revealed how there have been efforts to turn him into a Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates fan without success.
McKenzie, who hails from Heidedal in Bloemfontein, has not had a PSL side to follow since the sale of Bloemfontein Celtic in 2021 but it was thought that he could choose one of the Soweto giants to support.
He has, however, confirmed that he will not be changing allegiance until another team from Free State emerges.
Is it Chiefs or Pirates for Gayton McKenzie?

“I am like a man whose wife is in a coma,” McKenzie said on SuperSport TV.
“You look around but you don’t touch, you know your wife is coming back. You can’t be from the Free State and Bloemfontein and support anybody.
“Everybody has been wanting to know which team do you support. Bobby [Motaung] has been trying to make me a Kaizer Chiefs supporter, Irvin Khozer by virtue of his relationship with me has been trying to get me [to Orlando Pirates].
“You can’t and I can’t. You cannot be a Sele and support anyone else.”
Bloemfontein will have PSL matches in 2024-25
Bloemfontein Celtic were sold ahead of the 2021-22 season and renamed Royal AM with the club moving its base from Free State, leaving the region without a team in the top flight.
The club enjoyed a large fanbase in Free State since its formation in 1969 but had its ups and downs, with financial challenges seeing them relegated in 2001 before bouncing back to the top flight after three years.
McKenzie can, however, look forward to top flight football matches in Bloemfontein after Marumo Gallants announced that they would be moving their home matches to Free State after completing the purchase of Moroka Swallows FC in June.
