Glody Lilepo reveals secret behind good start at Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs new signing Glody Lilepo believes his ability to adapt to different tactical setups has allowed him to thrive at the club.

Lilepo has been the most impressive among Chiefs’ January signings, with three goals and an assist in six games, besides his great work rate.

The Congolese is quickly winning over the Chiefs fans with his tenacity, running at opponents, creating and scoring goals, while he is also the first line of defence for his team when they lose possession.

Lilepo is happy to embrace the defensive side of the game and explained how he had to sacrifice a lot of his attacking talents to help out defensively in last Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns before unleashing his ammunition on Magesi FC on Tuesday.

“In professional football, you need to defend and attack, both sides of the game you have to be good at it. The Mamelodi [Sundowns] game was very different in terms of tactical advice,” Lilepo told SuperSport TV.

“We were defending with two strikers me and [Tashreeq] Morris but today [Tuesday], they gave me the opportunity and freedom to play in the wide areas to get a lot of one-v-ones against my direct opponents to try to beat him, make crosses and make a difference.”

What is the winger’s message to Chiefs?

Lilepo provided the assist for Ashley Du Preez’s goal that handed Chiefs a 1-0 win over Magesi in Tuesday’s game, when the Glamour Boys struggled to show their quality, although he had a couple of chances to score.

The winger is calling for a positive mindset from his side, even when things are not looking up, as he believes that will be the only way of grinding out results.

“It was a frustrating game but in these kinds of games you need to just stay focused because at some point, you can get the opportunity to score or finish and that is why you need to stay focused even in frustrating moments,” he added.

The former Valenciennes star will hope to continue his fine run when Nasreddin Nabi’s team play away to Stellenbosch in the quarter-final of the Nedbank Cup on Saturday March 8.
