Pirates have raked in R40 million from five trophies
![Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has revealed the club’s next big target after winning the MTN8 for the third consecutive time. The Buccaneers beat Stellenbosch FC 3-1 in the final at a packed Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening. This was his fifth trophy since taking reins at Pirates in 2022. Given their success in cup competitions over the past two years, Riveiro acknowledged their ambition to compete for the Betway Premiership. He said consistency will be key in them achieving it this campaign. The Spanish guitar is already seeing positives after the Soweto giants won their opening three matches so far. RIVEIRO - WHAT PIRATES ARE AIMING FOR NOW “We're trying,” he said. “Like, I said already few weeks ago, I think we're taking every game so seriously. We want to fight for the league too. “We want to raise our level in that competition and we want to increase the level of the league itself, giving a proper competition to whichever contender who wants to fight for the league as well. “Fighting for the league, it goes without saying that. It's not about me talking here. We need to show [consistency] week in and week out, wherever we go and wherever we travel or whoever is coming to Orlando. So far it's something we managed to do. “We've played league games with three wins, we're trying to be that team every week again because it's absolutely necessary for us as a club, as a team and for the league too. So our commitment is maximum in three [domestic] competitions. “We didn't take the MTN8 lightly — in my eyes, in the group's eyes, it's an important trophy. “Same with the CAF Champions League. We did everything to find ourselves in the group stages. In the league we're trying to find that consistency to be our best versions in [all] the games. “So far we've covered three months of the season and we didn't sleep so much in these months. I think we did a good job.”](https://www.afrik-foot.com/app/uploads/2024/10/Thabiso-Sesane-and-Thabiso-Monyane-1024x640.jpg)
Pirates are the first team to claim the increased prize, following its elevation from R8 million, and it comes after a total of R16 million was earned in the previous two seasons from the competition.
Riveiro’s men have also won the Nedbank Cup in the last two years and with the trophy attracting R7 million in prize money, they have banked R14 from their titles.
It brings their total to R40 million from the five cup wins but there is more already guaranteed from the CAF Champions League following their qualification to the group stages.

Group stage qualification will now attract a minimum of $700,000 (R12 million) for Champions League teams, meaning the Soweto giants are guaranteed that much even if they do not go past that round.
Champions League quarter-finalists will be rewarded $900,000 (R15.6million), $1.2 million (R20 million) going to semi-finalists as runners up pocket $2 million (R34 million). Champions League winners will go home with $4 million (R69 million), assuming Riveiro’s men go all the way.
