How Ronwen Williams recent injury had a surprising positive impact

Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has revealed the unexpected benefits of his recent injury.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference for Bafana Bafana ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho, Williams explained how the injury provided him with a much-needed period of rest following a demanding schedule both at club and international level.

That qualifier took place on Friday, March 21st at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium at 6 PM where Bafana won 2-0, a result that lifted them to the top of the table.

Williams admitted that his performances had dipped, and he had lost some of his enjoyment for the game. However, the enforced break by injury has reignited his passion for football, leaving him feeling refreshed.

WILLIAMS ON HOW HIS RECENT INJURY LEFT HIM FEELING REFRESHED

“No player wants to be injured but I think it came at the right time for me,” said Williams as quoted by FARPost.

“I've played so much football over the last few years, the last few months and that injury, it's done me wonders. I've got more energy now, I'm looking forward to the games and I get excited again.

“Before, it was like you play every three days. There's no excitement because you're doing it over and over and over. And you don't enjoy the game anymore.

“So, yeah, it's done me wonders. It's given me time to relax, to miss the game of it, just get that spark back because if you could see, there were some goals that I conceded goals that normally you don't expect Ronwen to concede those goals.

“We are all human beings, we get tired, we get frustrated. And it came from me at the perfect time. And now I think the team and the country needs me more than maybe before.

“So, yeah, I'm over that. I'm looking forward to finishing the year on a good note.”
