‘I didn’t bring too many bags’: Mokwena makes admission about Wydad job

Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has made an honest admission about Wydad Casablanca.

Mokwena secured the head coach job at Wydad shortly after he parted ways with the Brazilians earlier this month.

Speaking in an interview with Radio 2000, he admitted he understands the off-field challenges that the club is facing have led to instability of coaches at the club.

Moreover, Wydad can’t register players due to FIFA transfer bans. They’re also said to be dealing with financial difficulties which have led to unpaid salaries at times.

It is noteworthy Wydad haven’t been able to hold onto a head coach for a full season since Walid Regragui's departure in the 2021/22 season.

Mokwena says he went to Casablanca knowing the nature of the job that he had put himself in. However, he believes he has nothing to lose.

“I was tempted not to bring too many bags, because of the nature of the job you know the story,” said Mokwena during the interview with Radio 2000.

When asked about the technical team, he stated they were yet to finalise it, however, last week he confirmed that former Sundowns reserve team coach Sinethemba Badela would join him as an assistant coach.

Rumours also suggest that Michael Loftman, who was a set-piece coach at Sundowns, will also be joining Red Castle.

“We haven't finalized [the technical team], it's a difficult one because l've accepted a project that everyone is saying to me ‘Where are you going!?

The club is on a free fall, it's a mess, the former president is in jail, they are not paying players, there's this, there that'.

“But okay guys, what have I got to lose? I've got absolutely nothing to lose. The experience of coaching in a different country, with a different environment, there's more learn, more to gain, it's a great challenge. It's unbelievable, with incredible supporters.”
