‘It was not obvious’ – Ex-FIFA referee on Chiefs offside goal

Former referee Jerome Damon has given his assessment on the Kaizer Chiefs goal against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semifinal.

In a match that was played at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday, Ashley Du Preez rattled in a late offside goal to send Amakhosi to the final.

According to former FIFA international referee Jerome Damon, replays and still images suggest a goal in question was offside.

He stated that such marginal decisions are difficult for match officials to adjudicate accurately without the assistance of VAR.

Damon felt the offside was not obvious for the officials to easily see it.

FORMER FIFA REFEREE ON ASHLEY DU PREEZ GOAL

“From the action that we were watching from Du Preez, it looked offside to me. And without the lines drawn which we don't have now, that was an offside and with VAR it had to be offside,” Damon told Soccer Laduma

“So, from where you and I are standing it's an offside and it should not have stood.

“But in football we get to understand and accept some decisions which are difficult. Though it looked offside it was not an obvious one where it was one or two metres between the last defender and the goalscorer.

“So that was a difficult one for the referee and his assistant which at times we have to accept in the absence of VAR.”
