Jamie Webber: Bafana Bafana midfielder secures record-breaking US transfer

Bafana Bafana star Jamie Webber has secured a record transfer to the US from PSL club Sekhukhune United.

Webber has signed for US Championships club FC Tulsa for $500,000 USD (R9.5 million) as per Transfermarkt and is close to completing the formalities of his deal.

The midfielder has not featured for Babina Noko this season but this has not deterred suitors from coming in for his signature.

As per Transfermarkt, Webber should have left a little earlier but his move was delayed by the lack of footage showing him in action, which made it difficult for scouts from a number of clubs to seal a transfer, but the strong relationship between Tulsa and his representatives convinced the US second-tier club to sign him.

Sekhukhune have a sell-on clause

“Yes, Jamie has signed with FC Tulsa. The transfer still has to go through FIFA’s TMS. The deal is worth up to $500,000 USD and a sell-on clause for Sekukhune is included in the deal. Jamie has signed for Tulsa on a 2-year deal”, a source told Transfermarkt.

The midfielder will begin a new chapter in the US with his transfer set to eclipse the $400,000 (R7.6 million) that Tunisian giants Esperance paid Sekhukhune for Elias Mokwana, which was then a record for the club.

Webber moves to the US at a time when his stock is rising after coming to Bafana Bafana’s rescue with a brilliant goal that saw them draw 1-1 with Egypt in the first leg of the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) qualifiers.

He was part of the team that beat the Pharaohs 3-1 in Ismaila on Sunday to book their place in the final round of the CHAN 2024 qualifiers, where they will face Malawi, for a chance to feature in the tournament.

Tulsa have decided to wait until the end of the CHAN matches against Malawi before completing the transfer of the 27-year-old.

Founded in 2015, FC Tulsa are based in Tulsa, Oklahoma and play their home matches at the 7,833-seater ONEOK Field.

Their best performance has been seventh place, twice, in the Western Conference, and 13th overall, but last season was poor as they managed 10th place in their region and failed to make it to the playoffs.
