Renowned South African football pundit, Junior Khanye, has pinpointed a Kaizer Chiefs star who should take lessons from Orlando Pirates playmaker Patrick Maswanganyi.
Khanye offered his insights on iDiskiTV following Pirates' 3-1 victory over SuperSport United in the MTN8 quarterfinal on Saturday.
Maswanganyi, a standout performer for Pirates last season, continued his impressive form. While his showmanship entertained the crowd, it was his influential play that truly made a difference.
Khanye lauded Maswanganyi's dribbling ability, which effectively breaks down defenses rather than merely showcasing flair. He believes Chiefs' Mfundo Vilakazi could benefit from studying the Pirates midfielder's game.
Vilakazi faced intense criticism after his showboating during Chiefs' 4-0 defeat to Young Africans SC in the Toyota Cup.
A CHIEFS YOUNGSTER THAT MUST LEARN FROM MASWANGANYI
“I don’t have a problem because the game needed a dribbling wizard, especially when you are playing a stereotyped team like how SuperSport was with every man behind the ball,” said Khanye.
“You need a dribbling wizard who’d surprise the opponents going forward. I think the likes of Mfundo Vilakazi can learn from Maswanganyi because he is more or less the same player. When I say the same player I don’t mean in terms of playing but the impact.
“They have the same body structure, they are both left footed but Tito is not speedy however his decision-making you can see his impact. There is a move that Pirates made that came from his dribbling and the defence had to back paddle then he penetrated and Mofokeng was supposed to finish.
“That ball started at the centre and you check his body language he looked static but he spun the ball, played it and moved quickly. They passed him then he played the ball inside, continued with his run, he skipped the ball and it fell for Mofokeng who should have scored.
“Mfundo is very talented but wasn’t developed properly according to me. The boy knows football but he was not developed properly.”
