The Glamour Boys are restructuring ahead of the new campaign that kicks off in August.
Premier Soccer League heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs have named a new captain to succeed long-serving Itumeleng Khune.
The veteran goalkeeper has been captaining the Glamour Boys since then, helping them to highs and lows.
However, the now 37-year-old was stripped of his captaincy a couple of months ago after a disciplinary breach. It was a costly move that might have contributed to the Chiefs' decision not to extend his contract as an active player. He was honoured in the team's last home game last season.
Amakhosi have a new skipper
The Soweto Giants have made a couple of changes across the board; they are currently under a new coach Nasreddine Nabi.
The club has now opted to hand Yusuf Maart the responsibility of guiding the team on the pitch for the unforeseeable future. The 28-year-old has been with Chiefs since 2022 after joining from Sekhukhune United, and his passion has been eventually rewarded.
The South Africa international insists it will not be his sole mandate to lead the team, “We have 11 leaders on the field, so the captain's band they gave it to me.
“It's a privilege to be honest with you, [to skipper the biggest team in South Africa.”
The Black and Gold are contemplating handing Khune a different role after his 25-year service as a player. Club's Marketing Manager Jessica Motaung confirmed the legendary custodian will not leave Naturena.
“In terms of Khune, the club will make an announcement, we certainly were in discussions with Khune, he’s part of the family, 25 years, I mean he’s like a little brother to me you know,” she told the media.
“We’re having discussions around what the opportunities are with him and we look forward to announcing those in the future.”
Chiefs are currently in Turkey for pre-season, hoping to have a better 2024/25 season across all competitions.
