Kaizer Chiefs midfielder opens up on how he dealt with 14-month injury

Kaizer Chiefs Siyabonga Gumede haw credited mental strength and determination for his return to action after a career-threatening injury.

Gumede returned to action last weekend when he scored as Chiefs beat Marumo Gallants 3-0 in the DStv Diski Challenge following a 14-month layoff nursing a broken leg.

The 14-year-old had last played for Chiefs in January 2024 against Cape Town City when he suffered the horrific injury that left him wondering if he could ever kick a ball again.

“It feels good, and I am excited to be back,” the midfielder told SuperSport TV after featuring against Gallants last weekend.

“I will work hard, continue to pour my heart and soul into the game I love. Thanks to all my family, friends, teammates and everyone who supported me during the difficult times while I was out injured. I look forward to doing what I enjoy most in front of you for many years to come.

“Yoh ngjabule kakhulu (I'm very happy) the coaches showed belief in me and I appreciate that. During the period I was injured, I had to be strong mentally and work hard on my return. You know injuries like this can be the end of a career especially if you are not mentally strong,” Gumende further said.

Chiefs are top of the DStv Diski Challenge table on 45 points from 19 matches, one ahead of second-placed Stellenbosch FC, and still with a game in hand which gives them hope of a maiden title.

Gumunde would be thrilled if they delivered the crown to Naturena and also feels it would be a major win for him on a personal level.

“I just want to continue where the team is, good performance and try to maintain the position we are in until the end of the season,” he added.

“And remember that we are here to make our families proud. We just have to keep a positive mindset and fight for the badge, also remember that we are here for our families, we need to make them proud.”

Chiefs are at home to Polokwane City in their next PSL Reserve league match on Saturday March 15, when they hope to maintain their place at the top of the table.
