Kaizer Chiefs offer for Stellenbosch FC star rejected

Kaizer Chiefs' bid to strengthen their left-back position for next season has hit a snag after their offer for a Stellenbosch FC star was rejected.

Amakhosi are said to be in the market for the first choice left-back after parting ways with Sifiso Hlanti at the end of the previous season.

Chiefs signed Bongani Sam from Orlando Pirates, however, he got injured while with the club in the pre-season camp in Turkey. He’s going to be out for a few weeks but with the league only starting in September, he could be ready for action then.

According to iDiski Times, Chiefs have seen their bid for Stellies left-back Fawaaz Basadien rejected.

The Phefeni Glamour Boys first expressed interest in the 27-year-old defender after the 2023/24 season concluded and were informed he was not for sale. It remains to be seen if they will pursue him further.

Chiefs have been the long-time admirers for Basadien since last season with clubs like Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns also appearing in the picture.

The former Moroka Swallows defender was yet again impressive in the last campaign, scoring one goal in 35 appearances he accumulated across all competitions.

OTHER OPTIONS FOR NABI IN LEFT-BACK POSITION

Chiefs also have natural left-backs Happy Mashiane and Nkosana Mbuthu as options for Nasreddine Nabi.

Last week, Nabi played 19-year-old Mbuthu, who unfortunately made an error leading to Young Africans' second goal in their 4-0 victory over Chiefs in the inaugural Toyota Cup.

The youngster was making his Chiefs debut in front of a sold-out crowd at the Free State Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Meanwhile, Mashiane has struggled for game time over the past few seasons. Last season, he only made seven appearances across all competitions.

At times, Chiefs have also utilised Edmilson Dove in the left-back position when he’s not playing as a centre-back. Moreover, Rushwin Dortley who was recently announced as the new signing can also play as a left-back.
