Kaizer Chiefs open to releasing midfielder in January

Kaizer Chiefs are exploring the possibility of loaning out midfielder George Matlou in the January transfer window.

The midfielder is currently sidelined with an injury but he will likely find it hard to get a place in the team when he returns and the club looks ready to offload him in search of playing time in the second half of the season.

Matlou is among Chiefs players whose injury status was confirmed on Tuesday by the club’s physio  Dave Milner.

Does George Matlou have a future at Naturena?

“Another player progressing well is George Matlou. He has started running and doing some ball work and we are looking at a November return for him,” said Milner.

Matlou has not been involved this season after suffering the long-term injury but with coach Nasreddine Nabi looking to have identified his team, he does not appear to have a route back.

This has made Amakhosi open to letting him leave until the end of the season after which the club will decide his future given his contract will expire in June 2025.

Nabi appears to have settled on his Chiefs team

“The coach seems satisfied with nearly 99 per cent of the squad he has started the season with. He is reportedly in need of just one winger and just one striker which he has been trying to bring in from outside,” a source told Soccer Laduma.

However, since those plans haven’t materialized, it appears that players currently injured or not playing, including George Matlou, are not part of his immediate plans.”

The 26-year-old joined Chiefs from Swallows FC on a two-year deal in 2022 and had a good start under former coach Arthur Zwane, after which his deal was extended by a year, but the latest injury looks to have put paid to his spell at the club.
