Kaizer Chiefs’ poor show in the PSL continued following a surprise 2-0 defeat away to Richards Bay on Sunday.
Chiefs, who had failed to beat Cape Town City in midweek, settling for a goalless draw, were looking to bounce back to winning ways in the league but suffered a ninth league defeat of the season.
After a goalless first half, Richards Bay began the second like a house on fire when Fezile Gcaba headed in Justice Figuareido’s freekick as Chiefs failed to deal with another set-piece.
The home side stayed resolute and with 18 minutes to go, Yanele Mbuthuma scored the second to sink Chiefs, who had no route back into the game.
Where are Chiefs on the table?
Richards Bay had come into the game with a defensive mindset with the aim of frustrating Chiefs and hitting them on the break and through set plays. That is what happened as they utilised Amakhosi’s weaknesses.
Nasreddine Nabi’s men will blame themselves for wasting their opportunities once again in a game they were favourites to win, which sees them drop more points.

Defeat sees Chiefs stay in eighth place on the log with 29 points from 22 matches and now six behind third place where they are hoping to finish and seal continental football qualification.
Richards Bay on the other side boosted their survival chances as they moved to 11th place on the log with 24 points, three ahead of SuperSport United, who are second from bottom.
