Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has defended the club’s decision to sing many defenders in the off-season, saying the club needed to build a solid foundation.
Chiefs brought in goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari, defenders Bongani Sam, Rushiwn Dortley, Miguel Inacio and Bradley Cross in the off-season with Gaston Sirino the only attacker the club signed.
Motaung says that was a strategic move as the club felt they needed a solid base to build on before reinforcing other areas such as midfield and attack even though that has not stopped them from conceding many goals so far this season.
Why did Chiefs sign defenders first?

“Everyone saw exactly how this season began. We requested for the supporters and stakeholders to understand,” Motaung told the media.
“We deliberately took the approach of signing from the back first. Foundation is very important for us and I think it is kind of a conundrum now because looking at it, we have conceded the goals that we have conceded, but the plan has always been the same.
“To begin with reinforcing the foundation, which is our defence, before moving forward. When you look, we only signed Gaston Sirino as our first offensive player with the plan for adding each window.”
Amakhosi backline has not improved

Despite the huge outlay, Chiefs have the second worst defence in the PSL, having conceded 16 goals, the same number of goals they have scored.
Individual mistakes and poor decision making has cost Chiefs dearly and there is still a feeling that the defence and goalkeeping has not improved.
Chiefs are now looking to make attacking reinforcements this month with SuperSport United striker Tashreeq Morris reported to be close to finalising a deal while Polokwane City winger Oswin Appollis remains a major target.
