Khune to remain at Amakhosi! Kaizer Chiefs confirm ‘living legend Itu’ is going nowhere

Published on by

There have been speculations about the custodian’s future at Naturena after his impressive stint that lasted quarter a century.

Legendary Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune will, after all, have a role to play for the Soweto giants as confirmed by Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr.

The 37-year-old has, on several occasions reiterated his desire to continue playing in the Premier Soccer League season for the next few years. However, the Glamour Boys are not interested in having the former Bafana Bafana international between the sticks.

As a matter of fact, Chiefs have signed Rwanda international Fiacre Ntwari from TS Galaxy ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, killing hopes of Khune ever getting another chance as Amakhosi's shot-stopper.

‘Itu has a lot to offer'

Motaung Jr. has lauded Khune for what he has achieved at the club for the last 25 years, before hinting the veteran custodian might be given a coaching role at Naturena.

“I think as time goes on, we’ll be able to divulge more information I think from the start of the season,” the 42-year-old opened up to the media during the launching of the 2024/25 kits.

“We sat down and spoke… as far as it came to his playing contract. We assessed everything and we sat down with Itu. We see him playing a very, very valuable role within this institution.

“I mean, he has contributed tremendously to this institution. He’s a living legend. I think he has a lot to offer, whether it’s academy players or senior players in various roles.

“So I think as time goes on, we will be able to divulge the next steps with Itu. But he’s very much a very important part of this family, this organization, and this team,” Mokwena Jr. continued.

“As the weeks unfold, we’ll be able to release some more information on the direction. A person who has achieved and been at one club as he has is within the fabric of the cloth and everything.

“[Amakhosi] are privileged to have someone like him around, especially at this important time. I think as time goes on, like I said, we’ll be able to take the next steps.”

Chiefs play Yanga SC on Sunday in the Toyota Cup before playing Marumo Gallants on August 14 in the Premier Soccer League.
