Legend welcomes Chiefs’ potential return to Caf competitions – ‘It will erase all the 10 years’

Kaizer Chiefs legend Mandla Masango has welcomed the probable return to continental football next season.

The Glamour Boys are in the Nedbank Cup final where they will play Orlando Pirates on May 10 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. A straight win will hand them a slot in the Caf Confederation Cup next season. However, they can still qualify even if they lose, since the Sea Robbers might either win or finish second in the Premier Soccer League, which will guarantee them a place in Caf Champions League.

Masango believes having Pirates, Sundowns and Chiefs in continental competitions will add quality to the national team Bafana Bafana, which will help them make an impact in international assignments.

‘I hope Chiefs compete in Caf tournaments with Pirates & Sundowns'

“It was a good thing that Chiefs managed to get into the final because now we need more teams in the African competitions,” he told SABC Sport.

“As you can see, Pirates and Sundowns, they’re doing well and it really boosts the national team in terms of having that experience and competing at that level, you know. I also hope Chiefs get to that level where they compete in Africa as well. We are very optimistic that the trophy drought will come to an end, that’s what we’re looking forward to. They have a chance, it’s just 90 minutes to rewrite everything, to erase all the 10 years [without a trophy].

“I think this win [over Sundowns] will most definitely do a world of wonder for these guys because, you know when you’re in a big game, it gives you that motivation; that you can build momentum fromNow everyone is confident that we can … win, we beat Sundowns, why not beat Chippa? I think this was a massive boost to morale for the team. Now, it’s just a matter of being consistent,” Masango concluded.
