‘Like Benni, Mofokeng is ripe for Barca or Real Madrid!’

Orlando Pirates youngster Relebohile Mofokeng has been rapidly developing since getting his chance at the club late 2022/23 season.

Last season, the 19-year-old played 38 matches for the Buccaneers and managed to score five goals and provide six assists in the process.

At the end of the campaign, the youngster was linked with moves to Europe but none materialized. The youngster is still with the Soweto Giants and has so far played 10 matches where he has scored three goals and provided as many assists.

However, former Orlando Pirates attacker Luvuyo Memela believes the youngster has what it takes to play for the best teams in Europe including Barcelona and Real Madrid. He argues Mofokeng can emulate the likes of Benni McCarthy and Thulani Serero who moved abroad at a tender age and made an impact.

Mofokeng can play for Barcelona or Real Madrid

“For me, I feel like he can play for teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid, he is a player with the ability to play at the highest level. I feel like he can play in top competitions like the Champions League. If I remember well, the last South African we had competing a such a level was Benni McCarthy,” he told SNL24.

“Then we had guys like Thulani Serero who played against Barcelona when he was still with Ajax [Amsterdam]. and even scored. But since then, we haven't had a player competing at such a big stage.

“It would be nice to see one of our own at that stage when watching football, and for me, that boy can get there. It’s good to see the progress he has been making, and I like how the Pirates coach is managing him in terms of how he is using.”

It is interesting to see whether Mofokeng will leave the Premier Soccer League at the end of the 2024/25 season or not.
