The veteran midfielder was let go by the Soweto giants after serving them for five seasons.

Orlando Pirates have made several changes in their squad ahead of the new 2024/25 Premier Soccer League season.

The Soweto giants have so far confirmed the arrival of  Delvi Miguel Vieira aka Gilberto, Thuso Moleleki, and Selaelo Rasebotja. Gilberto is the only player out of South Africa and is meant to add vital international experience having featured in big tournaments.

The players who have been released are Fortune Makaringe, Souaibou Marou, Richard Ofori, Vincent Pule, Siyabonga Mpontshane, and Kermit Erasmus.

Who signed Makaringe?

After his release from Bucs, the experienced 31-year-old was signed by Cape Town City. Why did he choose the Citizens?

“Well, to be honest with you this was a decision that had a lot of factors in it; I needed that tranquility and change of scenery,” Makaringe told the media.

“So the serenity that I’m getting here, it is the most important thing that I actually needed in my life. So the weather is the least of my problems.

“Football is more than just kicking the ball outside during life and how I approach my football life it’s the same way I approach my personal life. It’s more about creating good relationships, which is something that I’ve found here at home.

“The Citizens are a very family-orientated team and for me, it becomes even easier because we are more about fighting for one another and living for one another as brothers and that for me is why I’m here.”

What did Makaringe achieve at Pirates?

The experienced midfielder spent five years at Bucs and went on to play 149 games in all competitions.

He went on to reveal he had a great time with the Soweto giants, before sensationally claiming that joining the Citizens remains his highlight.

“My highlight of my time at Pirates was everything, from day one till the last day, and my current highlight is being here as a Citizen.”

Makaringe is expected to make his debut for Cape Town City on Saturday in the MTN8 quarter-final game against Sekhukhune United.
