Mamelodi Sundowns appoint new goalkeeper coach

Mamelodi Sundowns have strengthened their youth coaching setup by appointing former Bafana Bafana goalie as a goalkeeper coach.

While the club has made some adjustments in the first team in response to changes that have taken place, they have also bolstered goalkeeping department coaching team in the development.

Walters confirmed the news to KickOff, stating he has signed a two-year contract with an option for a third. He will be working with the club's junior goalkeepers, aiming to develop talent for the first team.

FORMER BAFANA BAFANA GOALIE JOINS SUNDOWNS JUNIORS AS GOALKEEPER COACH

“I have officially joined Sundowns, for probably a two plus one year, plus another year,” Walters told KickOff.

“I have already been at their training, I started on Thursday. I will be running all the junior goalkeepers.

“It's a nice, small unit. I know Surprise Moriri, Selekedi [Mogale] and all the guys I will be working alongside. I'm looking forward to improving the goalkeepers.

“It's a challenge. I have always wanted to get a development goalkeeper into a DDC [DStv Diski Challenge] team and potentially to the first team. It starts now.”

With experience running his own goalkeeper academy and producing players for PSL clubs, Walters is confident in his ability to identify and nurture young talent.

He believes Sundowns' resources and support will allow him to achieve this goal.

PROMISE TO MASANDAWANA FROM NEW GOALKEEPER COACH

“You have your best resources and everything at your disposal. There is no reason why we can't find a gem and get him into the first team.

“I was even speaking to Kennedy Mweene on Wednesday [last week], and he was also saying with me they know they're gonna see somebody coming through the ranks and sit in the first team.

“I'm bringing the professional mindset from the get-go; I'm training them for what they want to be.

“Yes, we develop. Like now from my academy, we got Thando Mthethwa at Sekhukhune United, and also the Engen [Knockout Challenge] Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

“If I could do that with what I had at my disposal, imagine what l'd do with what is at my disposal now. “Now I'm gonna have eyes all over South Africa sending me profiles. At the end of the day, Sundowns is a client, and I have to create a product for them, a certain specific product.”
