Mamelodi Sundowns seek SAFA greenlight to sign players early

Mamelodi Sundowns are already preparing for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup following their request to have their transfer window opened early ahead of the tournament.

Sundowns are among four African teams headed to the expanded 32-team tournament, that will take place in the United States between June 14 and July 13, alongside Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad Athletic Club, Aly Ahly and Esperance.

FIFA has therefore made special arrangements for teams that will feature in the tournament to have a mini-transfer window from June 1-10 when they can sign players and strengthen their teams before the tournament begins.

It is this provision that Sundowns are keen to utilise and according to SABC, the Brazilians have sought the greenlight from SAFA to be allowed to bring in players early before heading Stateside.

The national broadcaster reports that the SAFA has accepted Sundowns’ request but will have to get official confirmation from FIFA on the exact dates for that to happen.

Sundowns have been linked to a number of players such as Polokwane City duo Thabang Matuludi and Oswin Appollis, TS Galaxy winger Kamogelo Sebelebele and Zanzibari playmaker Feisal Salum, who plays for Tanzanian side Azam FC.

The Brazilians were busy in the January transfer window, when they brought in Jayden Adams, Keanu Cupido and Lucas Suarez, the latter on loan, and are looking for further reinforcements before the Club World Cup.

That would give them an edge over their PSL rivals, who will have to wait until July 1, to sign players but with German giants Borussia Dortmund, Brazilian side Fluminense and Ulsan HD from South Korea in their group, there is need to be well-prepared for the Club World Cup.

Sundowns’ last PSL match will take place on May 27 and assuming they make it to the CAF Champions League final, they will play it on June 1, before heading to the US for the Club World Cup.
