Mayo on why neither Kaizer Chiefs nor Mamelodi Sundowns stood a chance of signing him

The established attacker was rumoured to be on his way to either Masandawana or Amakhosi before the North African side came into the picture.

Bafana Bafana international Khanyisa Mayo recently joined Algerian outfit CR Belouizdad after having a fantastic time at Premier Soccer League side Cape Town City.

The 2022/23 joint top PSL's Golden Boot winner was heavily linked to either Mamelodi Sundowns or Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs. Both teams were keen on bolstering their attacking department in the bid to meet the objectives.

However, a couple of days ago, the 25-year-old opted to join the North Africans ahead of the 2024/25 season.

How Chiefs & Downs missed on Mayo

Before going to Algeria, CR Belouizdad president Mehdi Rabehi made an effort to come and look for the forward in Mzansi.

“The negotiations with the president went well; the president himself was a lovely guy, he came to [South Africa] to convince me to come to the club,” Mayo told Belouizdad media department.

“I looked at the club, its history, and everything else. I saw it’s one of the big clubs in Algeria, and that’s why I’m here today to join the team. The president was good. We spoke about negotiations, and everything went well; and I think for me, it’s to go further and enjoy the family that I’m joining right now because the president is wonderful, and we have a good relationship with him.

“He welcomed me very well into the team, so I’m grateful to be here. Other clubs had an interest in me, but I chose this team because I love the team. It’s a great team with great people and the lovely city of Algeria. The people in the city are very welcoming,” Mayo continued.

What is Mayo bringing?

The attacker is hopeful he will score lots of goals for the North African giants since that is his main job.

“They must expect Khanyisa Mayo, the goalscoring machine, someone who’s going to work, someone who’s going to be loved, someone who’s going to love the family,” he stated.

“Everyone will be excited to watch every game. I can’t wait to meet the fans. I think it’s going to be a great season for CRB and me.”

Mayo will have to settle quickly in the new environment to ensure he gets his chance at Bafana Bafana.
