The Mamelodi Sundowns coach has fired back at his critics who have doubted his capability
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has fired back at his detractors following claims that he is not good enough for the job.
Mngqithi has been criticised by some observers after Sundowns experienced a shaky start to the season before they returned to winning ways to claim victories in their last two games.
There have also been reports that Sundowns are in talks with Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy with a view of handing him the job but Mngqithi is unfazed by all the talk.
“I know what is expected of me and I sometimes I will be able to keep the job for long and maybe if circumstances don’t allow me and I don’t do well, I know what is most likely to happen,” Mngqithi said after watching his team open the PSL season with a 2-0 victory over SuperSport United in the Tshwane derby.
Why is Mngqithi not moved by the criticism?
“In life it is important to accept that you have to face the realities and the good thing is that I have a very high self-esteem.
“I am very confident in my ability and I know what I am capable of. It is not what an opinionated person says that defines me because other people cannot even manage their own lives but have big opinions about what you are competent on.
“If you listen to everybody you end up losing your mind so it is always important to trust my gut feeling, my competence and ability and to know that sometimes I might do so well but maybe luck might not be on my side and circumstances might not favour me.”

The coach is not about to change his ways
The tactician insists he has a firm grip on his team and is not afraid to make tough decisions which will only help raise standards at Sundowns.
“One thing you must know is I am very capable of taking decisive decisions,” he added.
“It is one thing I am good at. If you can check some of the top players that were respected in my previous clubs, when I say I no longer feel you and you are not helping the club I take the decision and move.”
Mngqithi’s team have responded well to their elimination from the MTN8, beating Mbabane Swallows of eSwatini 4-0 in the CAF Champions League last Saturday, before silencing SuperSport on Tuesday.
