The Mamelodi Sundowns defender has cautioned against underrating Matsatsantsa

Mamelodi Sundowns full-back Aubrey Modiba is wary of the threat posed by SuperSport United ahead of the two teams’ clash in the Tshwane derby on Tuesday.

The Brazilians open their PSL campaign against their Pretoria rivals and are buoyed by their 4-0 thrashing of Mbabane Swallows of eSwatini in the CAF Champions League at the weekend.

It was Sundowns’ fourth match this season, and the first in which they have scored, and even though SuperSport have just one game under their belt in 2024-25, Modiba is not underrating them.

There will be more than points at stake

“It is about bragging rights in Pretoria and it is not going to be easy,” Modiba told the media.

“I have managed to be on both sides when I was at SuperSport and played against Sundowns. I was always looking forward to that game because they are our rivals from the same areas.

“They have not played in a long time but that does not count, derbies are derbies, they are special and we are looking forward to that game. We have to put up a fight to make sure we get all the points.

How did the Tshwane derby go last season?

“The Tshwane derby is always goals every season which shows the importance of the game and how much each team wants to win and supporters must come in high numbers and we have to make them proud.

“Getting three points is important at the start because it shows we want to be in a good position going forward.”

Sundowns started last season with a 2-1 win over Sekhukhune United before they went on a seven-match winning run.

They did not lose to SuperSport, winning 2-0 away, before a 1-1 draw in the return leg, which should give them confidence on Tuesday.
