Bafana Bafana legend Teko Modise has explained how a chat with Pitso Mosimane saw him sign for SuperSport United amid interest from Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Modise had just been crowned Player of the Year while playing for City Pillars in 2006 and was a hot property with teams falling over themselves for him.
However, Mosimane, then coaching SuperSport, had a chat with the midfielder that swept him off his feet.
“When the season ended, I won Footballer of the Year in NFD (National First Division), after that, all 16 (PSL) teams wanted to sign me. I spoke to most of them individually,” Modise said on Izinja zeGame podcast with Josta Dladla as per Soccer Laduma.
How did Pitso convince Teko?

“You have to understand I can't be emotional, my decisions are life-altering. I can't be excited about everything, I need to make sure whatever decision I make will be sustainable.
“I was more mature, I spoke to Pirates, the late bra ‘Screamer' (Tshabalala), everybody individually. Then what changed was coach Pitso calls me, out of everyone I spoke to, Pitso starts coaching (while) we're sitting at a restaurant, telling me where I'm gonna play.
“He's not telling me I want you to come to my team, he starts coaching. I knew from that table I wanted to play for SuperSport (United).”
Modise went on to play for one season at SuperSport from 2006-2007 before joining Orlando Pirates, where he played for four years, and he would later be reunited with Mosimane at Sundowns where he won six trophies, including two PSL titles and a CAF Champions League.
