Monyane promises Orlando Pirates fans magic from Gilberto – ‘He is an exciting player’

The 24-year-old is convinced Bucs will go all the way and claim the second star in the Caf Champions League.

Orlando Pirates have signed two key players in the ongoing transfer window; winger Gilberto from Angolan outfit Petro de Luanda and ex-SuperSport United midfielder Selaelo Rasebotja.

The duo is meant to strengthen Bucs and help them end Mamelodi Sundowns' Premier Soccer League dominance. Gilberto is an established international who has played in every top-level competition in the continent, from the Caf Champions League, African Football League, and the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 23-year-old was part of the Sea Robbers squad that was in Spain for Pre-season, scoring a goal in the Soweto giants' 1-1 draw with Granada.

‘Gilberto is going to help a lot' – Monyane

Pirates defender Thabiso Monyane has now shed light on what the fans should expect from the new winger.

“Gilberto is quite an exciting player, I can say. He's very skillful, very quick, and all I can say to the Buccaneers is that it's going to be an exciting season,” he told the media.

“Happy People once again should be happy, and you should expect a very exciting team. He has been [in Caf competitions] and played there, and has a bit of experience ahead of some of the guys, so it's going to help us a lot.

“The senior players are also going to push us, so we're really looking forward to moving forward as a team.”

With new lads coming, Bucs will compete

Apart from the domestic competitions, Pirates will be playing in the Caf Champions League and most probably the African Football League. Monyane insists new signings will boost the squad in their bid to go all the way and secure a second star in the Champions League.

“Well, obviously with the new lads coming in, having to gel with the team also, all I can say is that there isn't anything so different – we're looking forward to actually competing,” the 24-year-old added.

“We don't want to repeat the mistakes we made last season because we know what happened in the CAF space, we bowed out very soon, and we're looking forward to going all the way and actually getting that second-star.”

Bucs start their season on Saturday with an MTN8 quarter-final fixture against SuperSport United at the Orlando Stadium.
