More pressure for Mokwena & Wydad after another disappointing outing

Published on by

Rulani Mokwena's Wydad Athletic Club were in action on Wednesday night in the Botola Pro League outing against Olympic Safi at the El Massira Stadium.

Experienced South African duo Cassius Mailula and Thembinkosi Lorch started the crucial game hoping to help their team.

Wydad came into the match hoping to get a win to sustain their chances of playing in the Caf Champions League next season, and ease pressure, especially from the likes of FUS Rabat, Renaissance Zemamra, and Maghreb Fez, who are chasing the Caf competitions slot as well.

The Red Castle started the match well and got their goal after just three minutes when Oussama Zemraoui found the back of the net. It was a massive goal that destabilized their hosts since they had not expected to trail at home early in the match. The strike was the only one in the first half as chances were not taken.

Wydad denied at the death

After the break, Safi came back stronger, pinning their hosts in their half, hoping to get an equaliser and probably a winner. However, the resilient Wydad Casablanca defended with intent, ensuring they did not make mistakes at the back.

Nevertheless, they suffered a massive blow in the 72nd minute when they were reduced to 10 men. El Mehdi Moubarik was sent off after a second bookable offense to give Olympic Safi a numerical advantage.

However, the Red Castle continued with their impressive showings, but their efforts suffered a blow three minutes to the end of the game, as Mehdi Ashabi found the back of the net to ensure spoils were shared.

Wydad have now drawn their last six games in the league, which keeps them in position three with 45 points, six less than second-placed FAR Rabat. They can still finish in the Caf Champions League position if they win their remaining three games and their rivals drop points.
